Make it simple, but significant
Everyone loves properly made cocktails and the best thing about Old Fashioned is that it doesn’t need many ingredients and really easy to make. All you need is a bourbon or rye, bitters, sugar cube, ice, an orange peel and a cherry.
Old Fashioned Cocktail
- 1 cube cane sugar
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 3 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 orange twist
- 2 ice cubes
- 1 Maraschino or brandied cherry
Cooking time: 5 min
- Put a sugar cube in a glass, add a splash of water and muddle sugar until it is fully dissolved before adding bitters. Pour rye whiskey inside and add ice to chill the cocktail down. Stir for 20-30 seconds and then strain the mix in the old fashioned glass over fresh ice. Garnish with orange peel and cherry.
There are dozens of different bitters, for example you can use orange bitters, but the classic is still Angostura. It has warming flavor, while orange bitters makes the cocktail more refreshing. Anyway, you only need two healthy dashes to do the job.
There are options with a liquor too. You can either use a bit sweeter bourbon or peppery flavored rye which adds some depth to the cocktail. Try: Knob Creek, W.L. Weller Antique, Booker’s, Old Grand-Dad, Baker’s, Wild Turkey 101, Wild Turkey Rare Breed or Rittenhouse. You don’t want that expensive liquor turning into a water, so you’d better avoid small ice cubes.
The most common modifications of the original Old Fashioned are using simple syrup instead of the sugar cube, adding soda water or muddling orange in the glass.
